Quartzelec upgrades its Abu Dhabi test facilities

12 February 2020

With a growing portfolio of international customers Quartzelec, the independent engineering service provider that’s globally recognised as an expert in rotating electrical machines, has just made significant investment in its existing motor testing and reporting facility in Abu Dhabi - providing a greater range of test and evaluation services that conform to the latest safety standards.

“Our recently commissioned test facility has been designed to deliver a host of advanced test and evaluation services on a wide range of electrical machines and will help us meet growing customer demand both in the Middle East and further afield,” stated Luke Clarke, Operations Manager for the Abu Dhabi workshop “We now have one of the most sophisticated facilities of its type in the region and this is a significant addition to our global technical capabilities.”

Quartzelec’s newly extended test bay in Abu Dhabi has been designed to deliver load testing of 3-phase AC motors up to 200HP using a variable frequency drive-based regeneration system to test motor responses at different frequencies. Further additions mean that the facility now also has the capacity to run LV and HV (3.3kV, 6.6kV and 11kV) motors up to 1400HP at no-load.

AC machines with ratings higher than 1400HP can also be tested utilising a state of the art auto-transformer, limiting start-up current to safely bring the machine to rated speed and rated Voltage. Additionally, single phase AC motors up to 5HP can be tested at both no-load and full-load. The facility also has the capability to test DC motors rated up to 800HP at full speed, no-load.

The full range of parameters that can now be tested, recorded and turned into a full‑fledged technical report comprise:

  • terminal voltage
  • no-load current
  • no-load wattage/power factor
  • speed and vibration
  • friction and windage Losses
  • efficiency test
  • torque vs speed curve

Additionally, a wide variety of evaluation tests can be carried out including; winding resistance, insulation resistance, HV test and surge test plus temperature rise testing.

Luke Clarke concluded: “Over the coming months we will be hosting a number of customer open days and we’d welcome anyone that wants to visit our Abu Dhabi facility and see first-hand the extensive range of services we can now cost-effectively deliver; helping make preventative motor maintenance and monitoring a reality for all.”
