Quartzelec responds when fire pump motor at power station failed

2 June 2020

When a fire pump motor failed at a UK power station and the back-up was already out of action; meaning the plant was unable to operate, Quartzelec, the independent engineering service provider that’s globally recognised as an expert in rotating electrical machines, responded instantly - making repair capacity in its local Swansea workshop, and got the plant back on line within days.

Urgent repairs are not un-common, and in this instance, having been called to conduct an onsite inspection, it was agreed that the fire pump motor required a complete overhaul and rewind. The faulty unit was removed from site and taken to Quartzelec’s Swansea workshop, with work being carried out by the team of experienced engineers over the next 48-hours and the motor then returned to site and re‑installed enabling the plant to resume safe operation. The Quartzelec team were also able to provide advice on how best to bring the back-up motor into operation.

“Quartzelec is the preferred supplier to many of the large power, utility and manufacturing operations here in South Wales,” concluded Simon O’Leary, Key Accounts Manager at Quartzelec’s Swansea operation. “This wasn’t a high value project to undertake but logistics and a reactive response were vital as the fire pump motor failure could have been far more costly in terms of lost regional generation of the energy the plant produces. We’ve a long heritage of delivering electrical engineering solutions and an enviable reputation for providing a quick response, a cost-effective solution and a fast turnaround; all important in today’s environment and all put to the test on this project.”
