Quartzelec assist Warrington Town Council achieve electrical compliance of their historic, 17th Century Town Hall

3 August 2021

When Warrington Town Council required their historic 17th Century Town Hall fully assessed for electrical compliance, Quartzelec, with extensive knowledge of Test and Inspection Services as well as experience of M&E projects in the field of maintaining and renovating listed buildings, were approached to undertake the task.

With previous experience of working with Mears Group on Warrington Councils’ behalf on a number of local projects, Quartzelec sent in a team of qualified engineers to complete a full test and inspection of all the electrical systems within the Town Hall.

“This was a complex project, given the historic age of the structure itself and also the age of several of the electrical systems within the building,” stated Craig Regan, Business Unit Manager for Building Services Maintenance. “In addition to having total knowledge of all current electrical safety and specification standards to ensure safety compliance and protect employees, the public and assets, we also need to be sympathetic to the fabric of the building to ensure its preservation for future generations to enjoy.”

The historic building would have once been a grand hall which has now been converted to create the council chamber and over the years, as the building’s electricity requirements have expanded, so has the electrical installation grown with demand.

Craig concluded “When assessing the electrical safety of heritage buildings it is important to be mindful of the working environment, realise what can and cannot be turned off as well as understanding the physical location of installations”.

About Warrington Town Hall

Designed by James Gibbs the hall was built in 1750 for Thomas Patten and became known as Bank Hall. Originally standing in open fields on the edge of the town, it had unobscured views south to the River Mersey and the Cheshire countryside beyond. In the early 19th Century, a perimeter wall was built around the estate to provide some privacy from the encroaching town and its industries.
