Anglian Water needed to urgently decommission the aging and high-maintenance Wittering Water Tower, which was no longer a viable asset due to its condition and operational cost. To maintain pressure and supply resilience across the Peterborough distribution zone, a new duty / standby booster pump set was required before the start of Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8).
This project demanded a fully integrated solution that included pump installation, electrical controls with VSDs, groundworks, and provision for emergency generator connections, all within a very limited site footprint and a strict delivery timeline. Subcontracting was not an option due to complexity and time sensitivity.
Anglian Water approached Quartzelec for our proven ability to deliver full-scope mechanical, electrical, and civil projects to a high standard under time-critical conditions, expecting a reliable, end-to-end service that ensured continuity of supply and full operational readiness ahead of AMP8.
The solution centred around the installation of a new duty / standby booster pump set, complete with dual tap-ins for suction and discharge pressure monitoring, enabling the booster to reliably replace the hydraulic function previously provided by the Wittering Water Tower. Variable speed drives (VSDs), specified according to the motor kW ratings, were integrated to ensure energy-efficient and responsive pressure control.
The existing pipework and legacy pump infrastructure were fully decommissioned and removed from site in compliance with environmental disposal regulations, with no disruption to service. The new booster set and associated pipework were delivered to Anglian Water’s Wing facility to allow for a full Materials in Contact (MIC) suite to be sampled prior to commissioning. A detailed pump and pipework breakdown was also supplied to support internal approvals and long-term asset planning.
Additional works included the replacement of a single gate with a double gate for improved access, groundworks using Type 1 aggregate to facilitate safe vehicle entry, and the installation of a generator connection point — either externally or via an internal ‘cat flap’, to enhance site resilience and emergency readiness.
