Quartzelec’s largest ever on-site rewind completed at power station in Macau
The largest-ever rewind undertaken on-site by Quartzelec has been successfully completed in just four months at the Coloane CCA Power Station in Macau.
The generator stator measured almost nine metres and is one of six diesel generators that power the station owned and operated by Companhia de Electriciade De Macau (CEM).
A team of fitters and winders worked continuously from October 2009 to February 2010 in diffcult conditions, including areas with limited access and sometimes 100% humidity.
Led by site manager Keith Rosser and assisted by David Lapham, Graham Marley and Ben Trudgill, the team carried out the rewind by removing 12 rotor poles and then turning the rotor, instead of employing the conventional method of unthreading the rotor.
The project management and technical support team was led by Harish Mistry at Rugby. They ensured that work on the £600,000 contract met the deadline of February 8 2010, with the successful commissioning and return to service within five days, as contractually agreed.
Over the past decade Quartzelec has carried out work on all six of the generators on site.
It was back in 2003 that Quartzelec carried out a survey of the generator, advising a complete rewind of the stator to give long term reliability, should be considered.
As a first step, in 2006 Quartzelec was awarded a contract for a new set of coils and rewind kit. The coils were manufactured by Quartzcoil and shipped to site in January 2007.
The contract for the full rewind was finally placed in 2009 and the customer acceptance and takeover was formally received on March 19, 2010. As a result of this success, Quartzelec has now been invited to tender for replacing aged AVR equipment.
