Background
The Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery Company SASREF is at the very heart of Saudi Arabia’s petrochemical production. It is recognized as an industry innovator and was specifically designed as an export refinery. It was with this in mind that Quartzelec targeted this blue chip company.
In 1981, Pertomin and Shell signed a joint agreement to establish a refinery complex. Construction of the refinery started in 1982 with inauguration on the 23rd of December 1986. SASREF was envisioned as one of the most modern refineries in the world debottlenecking from 250,000 to 305,000 barrels per day.
The Project
Having presented Quartzelec to their foremost engineers SASREF requested Quartzelec to carry out a design study on an existing Rugby built “IK” induction motor. The outcome of this review led to the procurement, design, manufacture, testing and ultimately installation and commissioning of a new up rated mechanically interchangeable and electrically similar Quartzelec induction motor.
Meeting Shell design requirements was a challenge relished by the Rugby based engineers.
The project management from start to finish had to be closely managed from purchase order up to installation and commissioning of the new motor to a tight outage schedule.
Quartzelec’s professionalism throughout delighted SASREF, who have subsequently turned to Quartzelec on other project related business for both generator repairs and transformer replacement.
Quartzelec Expertise
“Utilizing our intellectual property and the expertise of our engineers in Rugby, we were able to guide SASREF through their decision making process, right up to the point where an up rated new motor was ordered. To supply a complicated certified motor to a foremost Middle East petro-chemical leader is a major positive for Quartzelec”
