Stage Coach Rail – Island Line Trains
Key Benefits
- Quartzelec built at Rugby the Stock 483 EMU in 1938 fitting the LT100 motors
- 100 year history and legacy IP
- 8 UK locations to carry out the work – support off & on-site
- One of the largest load test facilities within Europe
The Project
With a long history between London Underground and Quartzelec, we were called in by Island Line to assist in a breakdown on a LT100 traction motor which had failed in service.
We carried out an initial baker test to check for the inter-turn problems, and to identify what had caused the failure. A detailed examination of the coils identified the voids in the coils had been filled, and the quality of the varnish used.
Our range of services included:
- Full step by step inspection and report
- Higher traction spec varnish used
- Rewind of the rotor, and IR checks on the yoke stator
- Condition monitoring and vibration analysis
- Load testing up to rated output
- Full load simulation – acceleration/deceleration
Outcome
"Through our close partnership with London Underground and Island Line, we have the skill sets required to not just repair, but to find out the root cause, and put in place a better performance solution, so that we can extend the lifecycle of the Traction Motor"
